ProperLiving, LLC owns and operates Budget Challenge Personal Finance Simulation, the nation’s leading financial simulation geared toward students to teach financial literacy in schools.  It is considered the most realistic simulation in the nation, and the founders have a patent pending on their product. Based in Cincinnati, Ohio, the company seeks to change personal finance education from merely teaching concepts to applying them in realistic scenarios and practicing positive behaviors that reinforce sound money management.

ProperLiving, LLC provides next-generation teaching tools to help busy teachers with the important job of preparing young people with personal finance skills and knowledge for the 21st century. We have been conducting Budget Challenge simulations in classrooms since the 2007-2008 school year. We collect feedback each time we perform a simulation and have received rave reviews from parents, students and teachers. Budget Challenge has also been reviewed by respected organizations such as the Washington, D.C.-based Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Finance Literacy and the University of Cincinnati’s Economics Center for Education and Research.

Founders of ProperLiving, LLC and Budget Challenge

David Buten

David is a graduate of Purdue University (BS) and Indiana University (MBA – Custom Major- Strategy and Information Systems).  His expertise lies in finance, budgeting, manufacturing quality control, and information systems.  His experience includes seven years in various finance roles (including Director of Finance) at the nation’s third largest pediatric hospital; and three years as a strategy and operations consultant. He met his future wife while they were both studying at Indiana University.  Dave is a Cincinnati native and a graduate of St. Xavier High School. In fact, his alma mater was the first school to pilot Budget Challenge.

Dave is responsible for the finances and technology for ProperLiving and Budget Challenge.

Palmira Buten

Palmira is a graduate of Harvard (BA) and Indiana University (MBA- Major in Marketing, Minor in Finance).  Her expertise lies in enterprise application design and testing, team leadership, and banking account reconciliations.  Her prior employment includes five years as a strategy, operations, and enterprise applications consultant, two years as a VP in Finance at a regional bank with over $100 Billion in assets, and three years in manufacturing.  

A native of Mexico, Palmira came to the United States to attend Harvard. She is in charge of operations and marketing for ProperLiving and Budget Challenge.
