Curriculum and Planning
Third Edition of the Budget Challenge Textbook
We have launched the third edition of our personal finance textbook. Print editions are available for purchase at Barnes & Noble in both hardcover and paperback for classrooms that prefer physical books. The new edition keeps the textbook current with today’s financial landscape and tightly aligned with the simulation, chapter presentations, guided readings, and weekly quizzes. As always, the fully up-to-date eTextbook is included with every student license.
All-New Pacing Guide
New this year, the Pacing Guide gives you a week-by-week roadmap for the entire program — from the two weeks of onboarding before your simulation starts through all ten weeks of the simulation. For each week it lays out student resources (textbook chapters, real-world activities, and guided readings), simulation activities, teacher resources, and assignments and assessments, so you always know exactly what is coming and what to prepare.
Updated Weekly Guide Letters
The weekly letters that arrive in your inbox throughout the simulation have been fully updated for 2026–2027. Each letter delivers just-in-time information about what to expect in the upcoming week — what your students will be doing, what bills and decisions are ahead of them, and where you may want to focus class time — so you can stay a step ahead without extra prep.
Recognition and Competition
National Class Leaderboard — Now on Our Homepage
Class competition has always been at the heart of Budget Challenge. This year we are putting it front and center: our new National Class Leaderboard appears right on our homepage, showing the top ten classes in every active simulation, updated daily with average score and average engagement.
The leaderboard also creates new opportunities for sponsors to reward your students. Sponsors can fund prizes for winning classes — think of a pizza party, gift cards, or a cash donation to the school — and prizes for top individual students, such as gift cards, scholarships, or funded savings accounts. Premier national sponsors can even offer exit prizes, displayed prominently at the top of the leaderboard for all active simulations. Teachers control what appears publicly: school location, teacher name, and statistics are each shown only if you choose to share them.
Teacher Levels and Engagement Status
Because Budget Challenge is a learning-by-doing program, the more students do, the more they learn — which makes student engagement the most important metric in the program. That is why our new teacher recognition system is built on it. Teachers now earn levels — fifteen in all — based on the total number of engaged students they have taught, along with an engagement status that recognizes how actively their current classes are participating. Your teaching statistics are visible in your dashboard, and, if you choose, alongside your classes on the national leaderboard.
Simpler Purchasing and Setup
Forever Licenses
Licenses no longer expire — ever. In the past, licenses carried a school-year date and unused licenses had to be rolled over each year, which created confusion. Now a license is simply a license: buy it, and it stays in your account until it gets used. Your available license count is displayed right on your Create-a-Class dashboard and wherever licenses appear. One important exception: licenses purchased at a volume discount are not forever licenses — they expire at the end of the school year for which they were purchased.
Streamlined Ordering
We have also simplified how licenses are purchased. Quotes and invoices are now available for orders of six or more licenses. For five licenses or fewer, checkout is by credit card — the fastest way to get a small class or homeschool group up and running, with no paperwork and no waiting on purchasing departments.
Fully Updated Create-a-Class Page
The Create-a-Class page has been rebuilt from the ground up. Setting up a class is now clearer and faster, with your license pool visible up front and the purchase options — school pay, student pay, or credit card — built right into the flow. Less time on setup means more time for teaching.
Single Sign-On with Five Leading Vendors
Budget Challenge now offers single sign-on through five leading education platforms: ClassLink, Clever, Google Classroom, Canvas, and Schoology. Students and teachers can sign in with the credentials they already use every day — one less password, one less barrier to engagement.
Measuring What Matters
New Benchmark Survey
We are adding a benchmark survey to our quizzes that lets you measure the Budget Challenge difference for your own class. Your students’ improvement can be benchmarked against research based on traditional personal finance instruction — the largest national data set of its kind. It is a simple, built-in way to show your students, your administrators, and your community how much your class actually learned.
Proof You Can Point To
New Standards Map Page
Our new Standards page features an interactive map of the United States — and a promise: Budget Challenge teaches 100% of published personal finance standards, national and state. Click any state to see its requirements and download a state-specific alignment document reviewed against official source documents. We scan every state Department of Education site on an ongoing basis, so as legislation changes, the map keeps up.
New Effectiveness Page
How do you teach in one semester what schools struggle to teach in 13 years? Our new Effectiveness page brings the research together in one place: students completing Budget Challenge score significantly higher than students completing a full traditional one-semester personal finance course, and the page connects our learn-by-doing results to the broader body of published research on active financial education. If you ever need to make the case for the program to a department head, principal, or school board, this page was built for you.
Help When You Need It
Chatbots for Students, Teachers, and Prospective Teachers
Instant answers, around the clock. We have added chatbots to the student help desk page, the teacher help desk page, and our prospective teacher pages. Students can get unstuck at 10 p.m. the night a bill is due, teachers can get quick answers on everything from operations to coaching strategies, and educators considering the program can learn how Budget Challenge works. And as always, our live Help Desk team remains a phone call or ticket away, weekdays from 8 AM to 5 PM Eastern.
